Radish Facts and Recipes

Radishes are a fun and easy vegetable to grow and are a great choice for people that are new to gardening. This root-vegetable is quite versatile in the sense that you can plant it as both a spring and a fall crop. They are perfect for those who like quick results, as they can be ready to be harvested as quickly as a month after planting!

Radishes are not picky vegetables to grow and require very little maintenance. Unlike a lot of plants, radishes thrive on very little nutrients. They prefer to be planted in light, fluffy soil so that they have the space to form a perfect, round globe, and they do not require any fertilizer. In fact, fertilizing radishes (especially with something high in nitrogen) will result in tall, beautiful greens, but no radish.

Not only is the radish an easy crop to grow, but it is also a fun veggie to use in the kitchen. There are many ways to enjoy your radishes after you’ve grown (or bought) them. While they taste great as is, they are also a nice addition to salad bowls or recipes if you want a pop of color or extra flavor. Below are some delicious and easy ways to incorporate this nutritious vegetable into your cooking:

One of my favorite ways to eat radishes (besides raw) is to cook it in some olive oil and salt. It’s super quick and easy, and it tastes fantastic! All you need to do is wash your radishes, chop off the greens (but don’t throw them away! They contain a lot of nutrients and can be mixed into a salad) and chop off the skinny root on the very end. Then you toss them with olive oil, sea salt, and pepper (as much or as little as you want), and roast at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for around 20-25 minutes. For extra flavor you can roast them with different herbs mixed in, such as basil or rosemary.

Another great way to prepare your radishes is by turning them into “Cinnamon Radish Chips”! For this recipe you will need about 10-20 radishes, olive oil, honey, and cinnamon sugar. Slice your radishes into thin, round “chip” pieces (about ¼ inch thick) and microwave them for 30 seconds to soften them up. You can then drain and discard any liquid that comes out of them and move the radishes into a large bowl.

Once your radish chips are in a large bowl, add 1 tbs. of olive oil, ½ tbs. of honey, and 1-2 tbs. of the cinnamon sugar mixture. Mix it all together until the radish chips are totally coated in your mixture, and then spread them on a baking pan that is lined with parchment paper. Spread the radish chips out across the pan so that they each have a chance to cook evenly.

Next, place the pan in the oven and bake for 15 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the 15 minutes are up, you can flip the radish chips over to their other side and cook for an additional 20 minutes, this time at 225 degrees. The radishes will begin to shrink and turn crispy, and that’s when you know they are ready!

Baking radishes this way adds a lot of flavor for those who are picky eaters. Some people even enjoy radish chips served over Greek yogurt or in their salads!

A few other ways that you can incorporate radishes into your cooking is by adding radish slices to your sandwich, mixing in a couple teaspoons of chopped radishes to your tuna salad, mixing it in your coleslaw, and even adding slices of them to your tacos for an extra kick of flavor.

Radishes are high in vitamin C, contain anti-fungal and cancer-fighting properties, and contain virtually no fat. Radishes are often overlooked by consumers, as some people aren’t intrigued by the strong burst of flavor that they can possess. However, due to its great nutrition, this easy to cook with plant deserves a second look, as it provides a quick and easy way to incorporate flavor, health, and color into our meals.
